The left panel contains features you can access from within the pre-boot environment. They are divided in to five categories.
By default the Introduction link displays the Rescue and Recovery Help files. This link can be modified by IT departments to point to a specific Web site such as corporate e-mail or a preliminary troubleshooting site.
Rescue and Restore gives you the ability to rescue files restore from backup and restore the system’s factory defaults.
The Configure category lets you or modify a password to prevent unauthorized access to the pre-boot environment and your backup files. Access to the BIOS Setup and Configuration utility is also available from this screen.
The Communicate category allows you to open an Internet browser using the built-in Opera-based browser. You can also download files and map network drives to access backups located on a network resource.
If you are using the IBM preload on your system you can also access the PC Doctor diagnostic tools from the Troubleshoot category. You can run the diagnostics or create the PC Doctor diskettes to proceed with more in-depth troubleshooting.
Click Rescue Files to open the File Recovery screen. Much like the Rescue and Recovery screen in Windows you can recover backed-up files non-backed-up files and even the entire hard drive contents from this location. Simply determine which action you would like to perform.
One of the strongest capabilities of the new Rescue and Recovery Utility is the ability to recover files from a corrupted or nonfunctioning operating system. You can even recover critical work files that have not yet been backed up.
To rescue non-backed-up files click on Rescue and Restore then Rescue Files. Select I want to choose which files to rescue from a list of files that have been created or changed since my last backup. The drive is then scanned and the search results displayed. To make the selection easier and more targeted go to the C:\\\\ file list and place a check beside each file you wish to rescue. In the Files to Copy window verify that the correct files have been selected. Click Next. In the spin box choose diskette drive as the location to copy the rescued files. This can also be a local drive or a USB storage device or diskette.
Select the file or files you wish to rescue then click Next to complete the procedure. Click OK and then Exit to return to the Main Menu.
