The IBM Pre-Boot Environment is a one-button disaster recovery utility designed to complement the capabilities of Rescue and Recovery while providing the familiar windows interface to the user.
Rescue and Recovery displays a GUI-based pre-boot environment allows you to rescue one file a folder or the entire hard disk even when the file has not been backed up or the operating system is completely nonfunctioning. This utility is a stripped-down version of Windows based on the WIN PE -- or Windows Pre-boot Environment -- operating system. The Windows GUI provides access to a hidden protected pre-boot operating system environment. From here you can recover files restore your operating system to the last working backup access the Internet to troubleshoot or diagnose support issues download files browse the Web and send e-mail your IT support personnel.
The pre-boot environment can be booted from the local hard disk a USB drive a CD-ROM drive or a network-mapped drive using the Rescue Media CD.
To access the pre-boot environment from a ThinkPad or ThinkCentre start the system and press the F11 key to access the Rescue and Recovery utility. On ThinkPads you can simply press the blue Access IBM button to boot to the pre-boot environment. The new predesktop can take up to four minutes to completely boot the system but the enhancements far out weigh this minor inconvenience. Support for ethernet and removable USB devices is provided but you must have the device connected to the system before you boot the system. Otherwise the system will not detect the device.
The Welcome screen is a fully customizable HTML page and is designed to give the user a starting point to begin diagnostics or file recovery. Click Continue.
In the menu bar clicking on System Information allows you to access system information such as BIOS level version and date machine type and model serial number and hardware information.
The Events Log viewer displays the status of Rescue and Recovery and displays information about what has been occurring in the pre-boot environment.
Click the Warranty Status button. The Warranty Status screen can display the service warranty status of the system by connecting to the IBM support Web site and querying the serial number of the system. You must be connected to the Internet.
Clicking on the Help button will display context-sensitive help files for all areas of Rescue and Recovery. All help files are fully customizable and allow an IT department to customize the HTML-based files to reflect their own support needs.
