IBM Rescue and Recovery is a customizable backup and disaster recovery utility designed for IBM ThinkCentre and ThinkPad products. Rescue and Recovery is a Windows-based backup utility that allows you to back up a single file or your entire hard disk drive to your current hard disk drive a second hard disk drive or detached USB drive CD-ROM DVD drive or network share. All file backup images can be password protected to prevent unauthorized access and multiple backups of the same image can exist with different version levels or dates.

IBM Rescue and Recovery is available for select models of IBM systems with Windows 2000 or Windows XP operating systems. An OEM version is available for Intel-based non-IBM computers running Windows 2000 or Windows XP for a nominal fee. The IBM version can be downloaded from the IBM Support Web site as a standard setup.exe file and installed to a supported IBM client system. Administrative installs are also supported and an .msi file is provided as part of the download package.

Once installed the Rescue and Recovery screen is displayed. You should complete the installation by configuring your backup preferences establishing a backup schedule determining what partitions to back up and selecting the locations of your backups.

To configure your preferences click Backup then click Set Preferences. In the Set Preferences screen you can determine which partition you wish to back up or if multiple partitions exist on the same drive you can choose to back up the entire drive. You can also determine if you need to back up all files on the drive or choose to ignore certain types of files such as temp files cached internet browser pages or files that have been moved to the recycle bin. For purposes of this demonstration video we will choose to Include only selected partitions and to back up all files and folders. Click Next. Verify that only the local partition is selected then click Next again. Click Finish to go back to the Main Menu screen.
