This section will demonstrate IBM Password Manager one of the powerful Client Security utilities available for download from the IBM Client Security Web site. For this demonstration Password Manager has already been installed.
Password Manager allows you to safely store the ID and password of each application that requires authentication. Then when starting that application all that is required is a double-click on the Lock icon to inform Password Manager to enter the required data. Password manager relies on Client Security software to satisfy the authentication as frequently as you or the administrator have designated through the system.
Using a test account with Microsoft Messenger we will build a series of inputs that will allow us to log onto .NET Messenger Service just by clicking the Lock icon that Password Manager has placed on the task bar. Logging onto .NET Messenger would normally require remembering yet another user ID and password.
First with the Windows .NET Messenger log on screen displayed right click on the Client Security Lock icon on the task bar and select Create. Since we previously built a .NET test account to use it is now just a matter of inputting the values required for log on
First we type the previously created Windows .NET Messenger ID in the Password Manager input field. Then using the select field drag the crosshair up to the matching field in the log on window. Next type the Messenger password in the data entry field and again drag it up the appropriate field in the log on window. Notice that if your workstation is in an unsecured area you can click the button to Obscure typed text for privacy to hide your entries. Once the values are entered select the Save New Entry button. This will allow you to alter the name of the entry and if needed you can check the box to Add ‘Enter’ to automatically submit the entry. We will leave that selection unchecked so you can see the effects of the data being entered.
Select Save New Entry again then select Close to exit the data entry mode. Now clear the fields in the Windows Messenger .NET log on window. To see the effects of our work double click on the Lock icon to reenter the data. Remember if we had checked the box to Add Enter this would have been done for us automatically. In our case press the button to log on.
Note that there is a problem. We did not enter the complete log on ID when we built the entry. This is easily fixed by editing Password Manager. Right-click on the Lock icon and select Manage. This will allow us to edit the entries under .NET Messenger Service.
Click the plus sign next to the entry to expand it. Right-click on the ID field then select Change Entry Field and select Edit. Add the missing text and then click Enter and Save Changes. Select Close to exit the IBM Password Manager screen.
Now test our entry again by clearing the fields in the .NET Messenger Service log on screen. Double-click on the Lock icon once again to automatically fill the fields. Select OK to verify that the entries are correct.
This procedure will work for virtually any program that requires ID and password entries.
This concludes the demonstration of IBM Password Manager.
