Instead of actually lowering the sensitivity you can check the box that allows the program to Adaptively ignore frequent repetitive shocks such as those experienced in a train or automobile. When this feature is selected the program will track the shocks and use algorithms to automatically adjust the sensitivity accordingly. Once the repetitive shocks are reduced the system will automatically readjust itself to a higher level of protection.
If you are in a situation where you do not want to be interrupted by the Active Protection System (APS) you can select Allow me to manually suspend the Active Protection System. This setting allows you to set a time from .5 minutes to 3.0 minutes. This also affects the time that the Active Protection System will be suspended from the option on the tray icon again from .5 to 3.0 minutes. Once the time is set it will reflect this same time in the tray icon option.
The first option in the Notification area is When the hard drive is stopped prompt me to manually suspend the Active Protective System. The second is to Show the Active Protection Icon on the system tray. This can be used in conjunction with the final option which is Allow only users with administrative privileges to modify settings for the Active Protection System. With the icon disabled and administrative privileges set users without administrative privileges will not be able to make changes to the Active Protection System.
Next click on the Real time Status tab at the top of the IBM Active Protection System Properties window. This is a dynamic view of what the sensor is seeing. Notice that the image in the Status window moves as the machine is moved as slight movements are monitored and recorded. As the movement increases the APS will use algorithms to automatically adjust the sensitivity. When a threshold is crossed indicating that the machine has been bumped hard enough to cause damage or is falling from a height that could potentially damage the hard drive the APS will instantly retract the heads to a parked position and stop the hard drive.
If the Adaptively Ignore Repetitive Shocks option is checked the APS will attempt to adjust and filter out continuous movement until that movement subsides. Then protection will increase once again to the highest value. Remember that if you are in a situation where APS control of the hard disk is unwanted you can temporarily disable the feature by using the Suspend function rather than turning it off altogether. This will allow APS to re-engage after the preset time rather than relying on you to remember to re-enable it.
This concludes the demonstration of the IBM Hard Drive Active Protection System.
