The IBM Hard Drive Active Protection System is a hardware and software system that helps protect an IBM ThinkPad hard disk drive from potential damage due to a sudden shock or fall. This demonstration video walks you through the software features of the system by showing the steps that are taken to alter settings and utilize system options. The Active Protection System (APS) is installed and is active by default when an IBM ThinkPad model equipped with APS is purchased. Active Protection is disabled when the ThinkPad is:
- Loading the operating system
- In standby or hibernation mode
- Resuming from normal operation after being in standby or hibernation mode
- Being shut down
- Turned off
If the operating system is reloaded or a corporate image is installed the proper drivers and software must be reloaded to activate protection. The vibration sensor is reliant on the software program to control the hard drive.
Notice that when you mouse over the Hard Drive Active Protection applet icon on the Windows system tray it will indicate the status of the protection which is enabled by default. A green arrow appears inside the icon if protection is active. This indication will change as the level of protection changes.
Left click on the icon. Two options are offered. One is to Temporarily suspend the Active Protection System (0.5 min.). We will see later that this option will allow us to manually suspend the Active Protection System from .5 minutes to 3 minutes.
The second option is to Configure Active Protection Settings. When this is selected the IBM Active Protection System Properties screen is displayed. Under Settings the options allow us to Enable or Disable the Active Protection System and then set the sensitivity. When we remove the check from Enable or Disable the Active Protection System a warning window will ask Are you sure you want to disable the Active Protection System?. At this point clicking on Yes will arm the program but the function will not complete until the Apply button is clicked.
Once the Apply button is pressed note the condition of the icon in the system tray. An exclamation point indicates that protection is disabled and mousing over the icon will also indicate that protection is disabled. To re-enable protection place a check in the box and click Apply once again. This will reactivate the Active Protection System. Again note the condition of the system tray icon.
The next selection will adjust the sensitivity. For most environments the default setting is sufficient but there will be times when it may be too sensitive such as riding in a bus or subway. If the Active Protection System is triggering too often you may want to lower the sensitivity until it matches the environment. Remember to set it back to the high setting when your trip is completed so that you can take full advantage of the protection offered.
