In this IBM Access Connections demonstration we will look at setting up a wireless wide-area network connection using a Novatel Wireless Connection PC card. One of the advantages of Access Connections is that will control the connection all the way through to accessing a Web site. Without Access Connections you would have to perform several steps -- including at least two just to activate the PC card connection -- to accomplish the same task.

Once Access Connections is configured for any connection it will add an icon to the task bar. Click the icon and select Launch IBM Access Connections. The Connection Status screen will be displayed. The dropdown menus across the top of the screen include: Network including Diagnostics and Exit; Location Profiles including Create New Disconnect Current Manage Import and Export Profiles; Wireless Network including Enable Find and Disable Wireless Radios; Location Switching including Switch Ethernet and Wireless Location Profiles Automatically; Bluetooth ?C (if available on the machine); Options including Global settings and Preferences; and Help including Help and About.

For this demonstration we have installed a Novatel (Sprint) PCS Connection card. The drivers have been loaded and the control program has been configured.

Select Manage Location Profiles either by using the dropdown menu or by pressing the Manage Location Profiles button.

On the Manage Location Profiles screen select New. We will name our new profile business roaming.

From the Type of Connection drop down select Wireless WAN.

We do not want to set up a VPN at this point so leave it blank.

Again leave the Quick Setup block unchecked so that we may see the different settings as we go through them. Select Next to continue.
