The Trace Route button is also important in discovering whether a link is working properly. If you have a slow connection it can be used to show the number of Hops that are being used to get to a destination address. The Trace Route tool will count the number of hops or communication links from one point to another and the amount of time it took for each hop. You will be able to determine if there is an area of the link that is taking an inordinate amount of time and identify where this “slow” link is located. This can be useful working with a support group to help identify problems and to subsequently improve connections.



Finally the IP Config button provides the ability to verify the configuration of All Adapters or by using the Select Adapter pull-down you can isolate an individual adapter. When you select an individual adapter and press the IPConfig button the configuration of that adapter will be shown. At this point you will have the ability to Renew IP which will request new IP and DNS information from the DHCP server. Alternatively select Release IP which will “clean” the information from the adapter so it can be reentered. At times this may be necessary to ensure the settings are not conflicting with the network settings.



At this point with the cable reconnected and the connection repaired we can enter Diagnostics and again try the Ping test. Notice that when an attempt is made to Ping an external site such as www.yahoo.com the Ping command still times out. The reason is that the client system is behind a corporate firewall. When an internal site is Pinged the system successfully communicates with the target server. This at least proves that the IP and DNS are configured properly and that we are able to communicate with the server. From here Networking support personnel could be contacted to find what is needed to gain access beyond the firewall. The Networking Tools were able to aid in determining the problem and helped to prove that the resolution was successful.
