Service Hints & Tips

Symptom

If the user looks at the amount of video memory reported by the ATI Catalyst Control Center on their Windows 2000 or Windows XP equipped ThinkPad T60 or T60p they may find a section that shows the "Memory Size". This memory size will differ from the information included in their ThinkPad system documentation as to how much video memory is installed in the system. For example ThinkPad T60 models with the ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 have 64MB of discrete (dedicated) video memory but the ATI Catalyst Control Center may report up to 512MB of video memory allocated in "Memory Size". The same may be true for ThinkPad T60 models with the ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 (128MB of discrete video memory) and ThinkPad T60p models with the ATI FireGL V5200 (256MB of discrete video memory).

Affected configuration

The following ThinkPad systems running Microsoft Windows XP or Windows 2000 may experience this symptom

  • ThinkPad T60

  • ThinkPad T60p

Solution

This is not an error in reporting the video memory. The ThinkPad T60 and T60p video subsystem is taking advantage of a new video memory technology from ATI called HyperMemory. HyperMemory gives the video subsystem access to the dedicated discrete video memory (64MB for Radeon X1300 128MB for Radeon X1400 and 256MB for FireGL V5200) as well as the ability to dynamically allocate additional memory from system memory during times of intensive 3D applications. The ATI Catalyst Control Center will report the maximum amount of possible graphics memory available to the video chip in the "Memory Size" field. This size includes the discrete dedicated video memory as well as additional system memory that the video subsystem can have access to. The reported amount does not indicate the currently allocated memory; only the maximum possible.

Different ThinkPad T60 and T60p models may report a different amount of available video memory in the "Memory Size" field depending upon the video chip hardware installed and the amount of installed system memory. Adding additional system memory will allow the ATI video subsystem to allocate up to 512MB less the discrete memory of system memory (so that the maximum Memory Size will be 512MB). For example a ThinkPad T60 with the ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 (64MB discrete memory) with 256MB of system memory will report a Memory Size of 128MB (64MB discrete video memory + 64MB of system memory dynamically allocated). The same T60 with 1GB of system memory will report a Memory Size of 512MB of memory (64MB discrete video memory + 448MB of dynamically allocated system memory). Remember that this Memory Size field reports the maximum amount of possible memory available to the video subsystem during times of intense 3D graphic use not the currently allocated amount.

Additional information

The "Memory Size" field can be found under View --> Advanced View --> Information Center --> Graphics Hardware. Underneath the "Memory Size" field there is also a field titled "Memory Type" and this should report "HyperMemory".

ThinkPad T60 and T60p systems with BIOS version 1.00 did not accurately report the Memory Size field. This error was resolved in BIOS version 1.01 (79ET55WW) and newer system BIOS.

Additional information about HyperMemory can be found from this link on ATI's web site: https://www.ati.com/technology/HyperMemory_Whitepaper.pdf
